Rafael and the fornarina

Tragedy

Synopsis

The love story between Raphael Sanzio and the Fornarina has been nurturing generations of poets, writers, and painters since the Renaissance. Rafael, despite being engaged to the niece of the most powerful Cardinal of Rome, Maria Bibbiena, had an intense love affair with a baker’s daughter (La Fornarina), which lasted until his death. This passion had the ingredients of legend: sex, power, and religion — all taken to the extreme.
